Amelia joins Young Musicians of Alamance

I have always been a big believer in letting kids try new things, let them see what they are good at and be supportive in their decision. Being a parent is hard work and we only want the best for our children so why not allow them to express themselves by joining a club or playing a sport.

Amelia, my oldest recently expressed an interest in joining orchestra. Her elementary school music teacher was volunteering in a program which allowed kids to join an orchestra.

So here we were having a conversation about her joining and how it would benefit her. She looked her father and I in the face and said, “I want to try it and see how I like it.”

As parents we were okay with her decision so we signed her up. At her first lesson she was measured for her violin and the next week she came home with her instrument and practiced day and night. Practice took place every Saturday and Wednesday and Amelia made sure she practiced and attended every session.

The child was happy to be a part of something and truly enjoyed learning how to play the violin. She made new friends and learned the importance of hard work. She was extremely excited, but nervous to perform in two concerts.

The first concert was held in the fall at a festival at the Alamance Battleground and the second was a holiday concert held in December. I think the response she received helped her build her self-confidence. She did an amazing job during those concerts and was looking forward to the spring.

But like most things, they come to an end and the pandemic played a huge role in that. Although she was disappointed she was grateful for the time she spent being a part of the Young Musicians of Alamance.

Until Next Time,

Samantha Jan
