Amelia the Academic All-Star

I am one of those parents who cannot wait to share my child's academic achievements. I am also one of those parents who is blessed to have a child who loves school and does extremely well academically.

Amelia, my oldest is in third grade and is not only reading at a fifth-grade level but is also advanced in math as well. She can answer 60 math questions in three minutes. She is doing two-digit multiplication and division. Most of the time she can figure out the answers to problems in her head.

During the first making period Amelia received straight A's and was selected by her teacher Mr. H, as an Academic All-Star. Since she was selected as an Academic All-Star, she was gifted free tickets to a UNC Tarheels game. So, on Friday, November 16, we loaded the car and drove to Chapel Hill. Now, we have never attended a college basketball game, but the experience was totally worth it.

At the beginning of the game they asked all the Academic All-Stars to stand. Amelia was a bit nervous, but the smile on her face was priceless. I saw how proud she was of herself and the confidence radiating off of her.

This child stood up in front of thousands of people and enjoyed her first college sporting event. At the end of the game, all the Academic All-Stars could go onto the court and shoot a basket. Amelia tried and didn't make the basket, but she smiled and held her head high as she walked off the court.

I will say this... she had an awesome time and the experience is something she will not soon forget. She had fun and wants to attend another game soon. Although, she was selected by her teacher she has always been an All-Star. Amelia surprises me every day with the amount of knowledge she possesses and her eagerness to learn new things blows me away.

Amelia is an amazing student and every teacher she has had loves her. According to some of her teachers, "she is a great friend and a wonderful classroom helper." "She isn't just the smart kid, she's the humble, friendly, and compassionate kid."

Regardless, Amelia is one of the kids who will excel at whatever you put in front of her.

Until Next Time!
Samantha Jan
