College Media Night in Phillie

As a Communications alumna and forever a part of the Delaware Tech COM dept, sometimes fun and exciting opportunities come my way. Some of those experiences are offered to both current and former COM students. Opportunities I may have never had the chance to experience if it weren't for a special group of people  who make them happen. (A few of those opportunities have happened to me, but I will start with this one first.

The Philadelphia Phillies hosted a College Media night, directed toward students studying in the Public Relations, Journalism, Communication, and Sports Broadcasting field. Students were given the opportunity to ask a group of panelist questions about their careers and other related questions based on what it is like working in the industry.

As someone who once was set on working in the sports journalism field I noticed that the entire panel was made up of men. I understand that sports broadcasting is mostly a male-dominated field, but I also witnessed the increase of women in the field. For someone like me it was somewhat discouraging and intimidating to see the lack of diversity on the panel. However, I did get to meet with someone who works on the Phillies P.R, team (a woman) and that boosted my confidence a lot and made me realize that the field is slowly changing. Either way it was a great opportunity learn a few things and tuck-away in my memory bank for later.

Oh and did I mention students got to watch the Phillie play against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

*FYI: This was the first time I ever attended a live/pro sporting event.

Here comes the fun stuff!
(All recollection of the events are my own and how I perceived them from my view point.)

What's a little road trip without some bumps in the road? Literally!  Our "fearless leader" did such a great job getting the group within a few miles of our destination when suddenly the van we are traveling in decides to crap out. So here we are a group of Del Tech students and instructors on the way to Phillie and  the damn van decides to break down. It makes for a great story now, but at the time it was no laughing matter.

I do want to point out that no one once complained or panicked about our van breaking down. We adapted to our surroundings and made best of the situation. We eventually decided to utilized Uber and made it to our destination. The Uber driver was fairly decent and we all made it safe and sound. I cannot begin to tell you how well everyone handled this, most people panic in situations like this, but overall as a group we did pretty damn well.

Hey look our van broke down selfie!!!!

Despite the incident with the lemon on wheels and the tardiness of our arrival we all seemed to enjoy ourselves. Who knew baseball could be so much fun!?  I truly had a great time and I couldn't have asked for a better group of people to experience this.

Oh, just in case you're wondering we did make it home. The dept. chair did have another van brought up. No issues getting home thankfully, but like I said what's a road trip without a few bumps in the road.

*Special Thanks
-R, Rector for driving us and putting this together.
-K. Mosher& J. Farley for their awesome company

*Anyone else I forgot to mention I apologize, but I show my gratitude.

Until Next Time,

Samantha Jan
