Hard work pays off
Excited does not begin to explain how I feel. Many words can be used, but I'll start with excited. As many of you know I am aspiring to become a journalist. That has been my dream for a long time. Rather it be publishing online, via social media or in print.. I live and breathe it.
To some having a story published in the newspaper or published online is not a huge deal. But I will be honest with you the first time one of my stories made it to print I was so excited. I went out and bought several copies. I even cut and framed the story and gave it to my mother as a Christmas gift. Yes, you may say it's cheesy, but not only did she receive it as a gift, but she received a copy of an achievement in my life.
So let me tell you the reason I am so excited. Last week the editor for whom I intern for asked me to do a piece on a local high marching band who would be participating in the New York City St. Patrick's Day parade. This is no ordinary parade it was the 255th annual parade. The local school band was the only band going from Delaware.
I had the privilege to watch them rehearse last week and interview the Band Director. I was so impressed with how hard this remarkable group of kids were practicing. It paid off.
As a journalist you want every story to be news worthy. You want that one story to be the big one. I know I do.
Well, today while doing my internship my editor brought me a copy of yesterday's paper. I thanked him for giving me a copy. As he was walking away I glanced down to find my story. I didn't have to look far...that my friends is because my story made the front page.
I was so excited I literally fell out of my seat with excitement. I immediately emailed my department chair and shared the good news and thank him for keeping my on my toes. I feel like you work so hard and you want that one story to make it. I always feel that each story I write is the one, but thank you to my editor for making that story the one story.
So yes, to me I have achieved another goal, it may be my own personal achievement, but my fiends today is a great day in the world of Samantha Jan.
Until next time,
Samantha Jan
